A Lovely Surprise Feb 06, 2010 When I saw this movie on Starz for the first time, I was watching it for plot rather than content. Something compelled me to watch it again, and I loved this movie so much that I added it to my collection. Other than 2 of the main characters, the actors were virtually unknown in India when the film was made. The impression that I came away with after watching this movie was not how different people of different cultures may be, but how much we all have in common in certain circumstances. Watch it for thoughfulness and romance.
A great film Dec 10, 2009 This review is for the Criterion Collection DVD edition of the film
Monsoon Wedding is an excellent film by Mira Nair. It is the story of a young woman in India who is betrothed with a wedding coming up. Relatives of hers are beginning to arrive from all over the world. Her parents are pleased at her upcoming marriage and she meets her future husband a few weeks before the marriage to see how well they get along.
The film is in a mixture of English, Hindi and Punjabi. Sometimes the characters change languages in mid-sentence.
I though the film was great and had some great music.
Later Mira Nair went on to direct the Amelia Earhart biopic, "Amelia." This was not a critical success but, in my opinion is a great film, and a new favorite of mine.
The special features on the DVD are as follows. Disc one contains the film with optional audio commentary by Mira Nair, interviews with cast and crew, and a theatrical trailer. Disc two contains Mira Nair's short films, all of which have an introduction by Nair. There are So Far from India, India Cabaret, and The Laughing Club of India. The final one "The Laughing Club of India" is about a man who starts a "Laughing club" for people to boost self-esteem and health. Also included on Disc two are fiction short films. The Day the Mercedes Became a Hat , Nair's India segment of 11'09"01--September 11, Migration, and How Can It Be? The first one, "The Day the Mercedes Became a Hat" is about a white family living in South Africa at the end of Apartheid and their efforts to leave the country. India segment of the 9/11 film is inspired by the true story of a Muslim man killed in the 9/11 attacks who was suspected of being involved but later exonerated.
This DVD set is really great and I would recommend it to just about anyone.

Well done Criterion! Nov 09, 2009 I will refrain from reviewing the actual movie. The DVD page for it and also other reviews for this release do an excellent job of reviewing the colorful expositio of emotions and life in India through the eyes of Mira Nair.
The guys at Criterion did a great job with this Blu-ray release. The transfer is excellent. Given the moods of the movie that varies from a misty morning in Delhi to the hullabaloo that is the city to the gorgeous colors of the wedding, everything looks as it is supposed to. The tones are natural- neither overblown or too subtle. The audio quality is excellent. I have a minimal home setup with a Sony AV receiver and a 2.1 Sony sound system which doesn't do justice to the audio from the movie.
I have not had a chance to see all the documentaries as part of the packed extra features in the selection. Of what I saw, I enjoyed the September 11 one and Migration. While I appreciated the one about the laughing club, it didnt do as much for me.
Overall, a worthy movie for the Criterion treatment and the effort is top notch. If you liked the movie, the blu-ray is a must buy. If you havent seen the movie yet and enjoy the work of the fine folks at Criterion, even more reason to pick this up.

Wow Oct 08, 2009 When I first bought this DVD I was expecting another happy/sad overemotional Bollywood, which I have no problem with. I had no idea this was an art film and was accordingly surprised. While not what I expected, this was a great movie. It had a lot to say about what can go on behind the scenes in an Indian wedding. There are actually two romantic stories in the movie, one an upper class and a lower class romance. Both are exceedingly sweet. The wedding planner is the comic relief and is hilarious. There are two adult topics in the movie extramarital affairs and child molestation. This movie was made to make a point and does so in a great fashion

Nice feel good movie Sep 30, 2009 If you like romance, this is a feel good movie that you'll enjoy. It's not a blockbuster or an award winning performance, but it's a chick flick that even guys will find interesting.
